Grandma remembered him as a "dare devil". She said one night they were all playing cards, and drinking and a friend bet him he wouldn't cut off a finger--- any way he took that bet and cut off a finger. When he was sober the next day he was sorry he had done it. He and Rosa had 10 kids and I have all their information.

Harper married Rosina "Rose" or "Rosa" HANEY on 14 May 1883 in Blue Earth, MN. Rosina was born on 18 Oct 1855 in Peoria, IL and died on 5 Jul 1935 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California at age 79.

General Notes: After Harper died, Rose moved to Los Angeles in 1910, with sons Arthur and Louis, where she lived until her death. Her Dietz children also moved to L.A. (am not sure if all did), and the 1920 and 1930 Census in Los Angeles, shows living with daughter Barbara Dietz, who remained single.

Notes provided by Helen Kutz, wife of John Albert Kutz, stated that there were twins from Roses's first marriage (Dietz), named Louisa and William, but that they died at birth. The below census seems to contradict this. Have not been able to find records of Louisa or William beyond this one census, so possibly they just died young, rather than at birth.

One more curious note. Our family lore from Helen Kutz, states that Rose had a child, Fred Dietz, in 1883. after Henry Dietz died (which she said was in 1883), and he was brought up by Rose's sister, Mary, in Wisconsin. I have found no record of this so far. I wonder if this was actually Ernest Dietz, who may have been born just after his father's death.

Below, the 1910 Federal Census shows the family still living in MN, before their move to CA. Rose had put her occupation down as a trained nurse, working for a private family.

LDS database that shows him as Joseph Christianson, wife Alma Bernadine, father Christian Iwarfson, has a different birthdate recorded. It shows DOB 28 Feb 1856 for him, but it also shows that as the marriage date for his parents, so we'll stick with the July birthday for now.

The 1930 Census finds Fred living with his new wife, Katherine, son Max and step daughter, Clara. According to this census, the year of arrival in the U.S. was 1893, not 1891 as previously reported.
