Excerpt from a letter of deposition prepared by Frances Green, a great-grandaughter of
Elisha Clark:
"...When Henson was quite a young man he and his cousin Cornelius Houck started west
affor. (note: Wilma Swanson says that Henson accompanied his Uncle Fleetwood Clark to
Licking Co., Ohio in 1815). When they were on their way they met a wagon belonging to a
Welch family named Jaggers. Stephen (sic: should be Silas - according to Wilma Swanson)
Jaggers and his family were going west to establish a new home. There were four girls in
the family, Charity, Sally, Caroline and Mary. Henson and Cornelius camped at the same
places with this family several times and Henson became fond of Mary. When they came
back to Newark, Ohio, the Jaggers family stopped there. When they became better
acquainted in the village there was quite a wealthy man who became interested in Mary and
wanted to marry her. But she loved Henson and married him. They were poor folks at first.
They had 3 cups and 3 saucers, 3 plates and 3 knives and forks. They lived on what they
raised and never got anything they could not pay for. By working hard saving they soon
had more than the man who wanted Mary."
According to the McLean County Biographical Record,..." For some years Henson Clark
was engaged in farming in Licking County, Ohio but in 1857 brought his family to McLean
County, Illinois and purchased a farm of four hundred acres in Randolph township on
which he lived for four years. He spent his last days with his sons, George and Harrison,

From "The History of Hardin County", Marion Township Chapter, page 951
Elias Jagger, farmer, P.O. Ada, was born in Licking County, Ohio, March 9, 1818. His
paternal grandparents were John and Phebe Jagger, the former born May 3 1748, the latter
July 2, 1746. His father, Silas Jagger was born in New York September 1, 1774; and his
mother, Sarah (Meeker) Jagger was born July 3, 1776, one day before the Declaration of
Independence.
In 1840 our subject located in Allen County, Ohio, and remained there until 1868,
serving six years as Just of the Peace, since which time he has resided in Hardin County.
He was married, May 15, 1838, to Maria Conkle of Fairfield County, Ohio, and to them
were born eleven children, their names and dates of births as follows: Wilson, March 2,
1839; Clarissa, February 23, 1841; Almed, November 4, 1842; Clearman, October 4, 1844;

on the Chicago & Atlantic Railway, in the southeast corner of Section 8, on the Round Head
and Ada Turnpike. The village is nearly centrally located on the only railroad and turnpike
of the township, and will probably soon become quite a business center.

From History of Allen County, Marion Twp chapter, page 669:
"Jagger is a new town laid out in October, 1882 on the southeast corner of Section 8, where
the Chicago & Atlantic Railroad crosses the Ada & Round Head Turnpike. Being near the
middle of the township and on a new through line of railroad, it may become a place of
considerable trade. two saw mills are already at work with acres of logs around them. Two
or three new houses are in course of construction and should the enterprise of draining the
marsh prove a success this new village situated on its northwest border will become a place
of considerable trade and quite a shipping point.
****************
History of Alger, Ohio:
Alger was incorporated in 1896. It was initially plotted as a station on the Chicago-Atlantic
Railroad (later Erie Lackawanna) to haul crops of mostly onions from the fields to other
parts of the country. Alger was first named Jaggers for Elias and Maria Jagger who supplied
40 acres for the town to be built on in 1882. In 1890, the name was changed to Preston for
six months until it was discovered that another town in Ohio had the same name. It was
later changed to Alger to honor Ohio born Michigan Governor Russell A. Alger, who was a
descendant of one of the pioneer families of Ohio.
Alger had a blacksmith shop run by Lewis A. Ankerman who manufactured big disks that
were worn on the each hoof of the horses to keep them from sinking in the Black Swamp
muck. Ankerman also started the Alger bank, which is still in service today as a branch of
the Liberty National Bank.
Alger suffered a disastrous fire in 1909 which destroyed much of the downtown business
district including a hotel, a grocery, the livery stable and other businesses which were never
rebuilt. Prior to 1910 Alger had its own newspaper called the "Alger Gazette" and had a
population of 1000 people.
